The Beginner's Guide to Crystals
Diving into the world of Crystals
Whether you have jumped down the rabbit hole of the metaphysical world or maybe you have just always had a fascination with crystals and pretty rocks - this post is for you. Below I break down the basic stones every crystal collecting connoisseur should have in their collection, how to care for your crystals, and what they can actually do for you.
Crystals
All crystals have a unique vibration that they offer up. It has been scientifically proven that everything has energy: the phone or tablet or computer you are reading this article on, your desk, chair, car, tree outside your window… all of those things are comprised of energy. This is known as the Law of Vibration.
Everything is running at a certain frequency. And so all of these crystals have that too.
Crystals possess earth energy, but they also have their own vibration because of how they're developed. And also when we set our intention into the stone or into the grid, that's what's really important as well because that's our energy. We're putting that energy into that stone and then the stone is setting that vibration outward.
Crystal Resource
My go-to reference has always been Judy Hall’s The Crystal Bible. She is an expert in all things crystals.
Crystal Grid Clothing
Have you heard of people putting crystals into their bras or pockets and carry them throughout the day? Ever wonder why someone hasn’t just made crystal grids that can be put into your clothing instead? Have no fear - Prism Wheel is here. Prism Wheel is a line of metaphysical products designed to help others feel empowered to take charge of their lives. Each product is designed with a snap system so that the wearer can keep their crystal wheel connected to their energy.
The 5 Must-Have Crystals
Selenite
Selenite is what you should have right off the bat because it offers these deep cleansing properties to not only you but your ever growing collection of crystals. Selenite is one of the most powerful crystals for energy clearing, making it an essential tool for removing negative energy. As an entrepreneur, it’s easy to get into scarcity mode or start thinking small. Selenite is a crystal that is sure to expand your horizons of what you see beyond your momentary view.
Rose Quartz
Rose Quartz is the stone of unconditional love and infinite peace. It purifies and opens the heart at all levels and in turn teaches the true essence of love. It is calming, reassuring, and excellent for use in trauma or healing work.
Amethyst
Amethyst is an extremely powerful and protective stone with a high spiritual vibration. It has strong healing powers and cleansing powers, and enhances spiritual awareness. The healing energy it offers allows you to not only open your intuition, but heal your intuitive abilities so you are able to connect more.
Citrine
Citrine is a great crystal used for developing confidence, self worth, and creativity. It is a powerful cleanser and regenerator. Like Selenite, this crystal never needs cleansing. It absorbs, transmutes, dissipates, and grounds negative energy. It is one of the most common stones used when attracting abundance.
Side note:
Until just recently, I always believed Citrine looked like the image to the right. In reality though, pieces like this more often than not are actually pieces of amethyst that have been kilned.
Clear Quartz
Clear Quartz is known as the most powerful healing and energy amplifier on the planet. It absorbs, stores, releases and regulates energy and is excellent for unblocking it. Not only does it help transmute and magnify energy, it is often used in crystal grids to amplify the intentions that are set. Once you set that intention into the crystal and you use it with another crystal - BAM - it becomes this powerhouse of energy.
Crystal Grids
A grid is a series of crystals placed in either a circle or some other kind of formation that then all work together to bring about a set intention.
Caring for Your Crystals
You may have seen Pinterest images that show you how to care for crystals by putting them underneath the full moon or other ways of cleansing and caring for them. Here are some of my favorite ways to care for my stones.
Selenite
My go-to is always Selenite. I will put a crystal on top of a piece of Selenite and leave it there for for at least 10 to 15 minutes.
Palo Santo and Sage Bundles
Another common way to clear your crystals is by burning either a piece of Palo Santo or a bundle of Sage and blow the smoke onto the crystals.
Smudge Spray
You can also use a smudge spray to spritz on top of your stones. Just be careful as some crystals should not get wet.
Charging vs. Cleansing
What is the difference between charging and cleansing (or clearing) your crystals?
Cleansing
Cleansing is more of like clearing out and removing any energy that the stone has picked up. This could be from your daily activities or from an intention you set with the stone. You want your crystal to be vibrant and light and provide you with the best vibration. The way I think of it is giving my stones a proverbial bath.
It is recommended to cleanse your crystals every time you set an intention or at least once every 30 days.
Cleansing Methods
Running Water
Salt
Selenite
Sound
Smudging
Bury them in the ground
Incense
Sun
Full Moon
Charging
Charging is more about raising the natural vibration of the stone to the highest level it can be. Charging is really about raising the the crystal’s frequency so that you can feel the true essence of that stone. This is why you may have heard people talk about placing stones underneath the full moon - to charge them.
Charging Methods
Sound Vibrations
Sunlight
Moonlight
Fire
Air
Water
Earth
**Some crystals should NEVER be in water:
Angelite
Selenite

**Some crystals don’t like sunlight:
Amethyst

Aventurine
Citrine
Kunzite
Rose Quartz
Smokey Quartz
Fluorite
Q: How Do I Know Which Crystals To Buy?
You never need to question or worry what stones you may need because crystals choose you. Really, you may walk into a store and then think,”Ohhhhh, that one is calling my name.” You might not even know the meaning and you're just really attracted to it. And then you look at the actual meaning of the stone and you're like, “Yes, this makes total sense.”
Q: I love crystals because they are beautiful, but they don’t do anything for me or I don’t feel any different with them…
I totally get that! But what you need to understand is that the vibration is always there. Even though you may not be able to feel that vibration, it's still doing its job and is still offering you that energy.
Q: What if I forget to set an intention with my crystal?
When I first started buying crystals, I was attracted to them and I thought they were pretty and would make for a great Instagram photo. It's okay if you don't set intention. But I do have to say when you do set an intention, your crystals will work more efficiently.
Q: What do I DO with my crystals?
You can meditate with them.
You can bathe with some of them, but there's certain crystals that you don't want to put in water. (Selenite and Himalayan Salt are definitely two that should never be exposed to water unless you want to dissolve your stones).
You can sit with them and be intuitively guided on where to place them on your body.
They can be used in Reiki healing.
You can use them to decorate your home, altar space, office, bedroom.
If I get the urge to do some real healing work on myself or while I’m working with a client, I will reach for the crystal that is calling me.
